Kate Mathieson has been appointed to work part-time for the NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre. Kate is a qualified genetic counsellor and has worked at Nowgen – A Centre for Genetics in Healthcare – for four years on education and public engagement projects. She will continue to work at Nowgen, but now also contribute to the national programmes for training health professionals in genetics.
The NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre was set up in 2004 by The Department of Health in recognition that genetics is becoming increasingly relevant to all medical specialties. Many health professionals are requesting training in genetics, including GPs, oncologists, cardiologists and midwives. Genetics is no longer considered a specialist subject, but a topic in which every health professional needs up-to-date knowledge and skills. Kate’s experience in interpreting genetics for non-specialists made her ideally suited for this role.
