On 4 December 2007, the Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust (CMMC) and Nowgen organised a symposium on Tissue Banking.
CMMC has initiated a project to set up a Central Manchester Tissue Bank with access to both public and private sector research organisations. The symposium brought together interested organisations in the North West and beyond to share experiences of setting up tissue banks, to understand industry requirements and the regulatory framework.An international panel of speakers explored the issues involved in setting up individual tissue banks and the European tissue banking network.
Professor Henry Kitchener, Director of Research and Development at CMMC, chaired the symposium. Over 60 industry, academic, and clinical professionals enjoyed lively and informative presentations and debate.
Nowgen and CMMC were delighted to welcome Professor Kurt Zatloukal, Professor of Pathology at the University of Graz, Austria, and Coordinator of Genome Austria Tissue Bank as the keynote speaker.Professor Zatloukal discussed the opportunities for tissue banks in pan-european biobanking and the biomolecular resources research infrastructure.
Professor Noel Clarke of the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research spoke of tissue and data delivery at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre Tissue Bank. The centre is managed by a ‘federation’ of academic and NHS Trust Institutions in Greater Manchester whose role is to define and implement the research strategy for Cancer.
Dr Chris Womack, Principal Clinical Histopathologist in Cancer Discovery at AstraZeneca addressed the needs of industry in relation to research tissue banks.
Dr Brian Clark, Chief Executive of onCore UK spoke of the opportunities and challenges of large scale research tissue banking.
