Visiting Schools
When Nowgen was first set up, members of the Nowgen team made many visits to schools to engage local people about genetic medicine. It is now rare for us to travel out to schools and the reasons for this are:
- In 2005 the Nowgen Centre was built, which provides unrivalled facilities, including our teaching laboratory.
- The location of the Nowgen Centre makes it easy for leading researchers and medics to contribute to our events. They might not be able to help if events were held elsewhere.
- With limited resources, it allows the Nowgen team to deliver far more, as we are not spending significant time travelling.
In the past we have worked with many individual schools that have invited us to visit them. Our workshops typically provided an overview of some of the advances in genetic medicine and asked the students for their opinions. We did also get involved in some highly creative projects with our Artist in Residence programme and a drama partnership with a local school.
We have also worked through SETPOINT Greater Manchester to help with a number of their initiatives – such as their FUTURE events and Science and Engineering Ambassadors Scheme.
We will still visit schools, but this is unusual unless there is funding in place to enable us to do so.
