DYSCERNE

DYSCERNE is a European network of Centres of Expertise in dysmorphology, led from Manchester, with Nowgen as a base for the UK team. Dysmorphology is the branch of genetics concerned with the study of birth defects or malformations which have recognisable patterns of growth, development, behaviour and physical features. DYSCERNE aims to raise standards for the diagnosis, management, and information dissemination of rare dysmorphic conditions.

Dyscerne compressedThe first DYSCERNE partners meeting was held in December 2007 at The Nowgen Centre.

DYSCERNE’s main aims are to raise current standards for the diagnosis, management, and information dissemination of rare dysmorphic conditions. These aims will be facilitated by:

  • Formation of a European-wide network of Centres of Expertise in dysmorphology
  • Establishment of a web-based electronic diagnostic system for dysmorphology (DDS) enabling clinicians to submit difficult to diagnose cases electronically to an expert panel for review and diagnosis
  • Development of clinical management guidelines for selected dysmorphic syndromes which will be piloted, and disseminated throughout the European clinical genetics community

The main partners in the project come from six EU Countries with designated centres of expertise in dysmorphology including: UK, Belgium, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Poland. The lead partner in DYSCERNE, with responsibility for the overall management and coordination of the project is the Nowgen DYSCERNE team (The University of Manchester).
