Molecular Genetics for Genetic Counsellors

4 - 5 December 2008

The Nowgen Centre

In 2008, Nowgen has organised two-day interactive workshops specially designed for genetic counsellors and nurses. The aims of the course are to help the delegate:

  • Gain insight into what happens when a patient’s sample is sent for DNA testing
  • Familiarise delegates with terminology used in the lab
  • Understand how test results are reported

On day 1 we look at the principles of DNA analysis, including a practical session on the use of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), including set-up, analysis, interpretation and troubleshooting.

On day 2 we use case studies and patient data to explore when different techniques are used to diagnose conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Huntington disease, Duchene muscular dystrophy and familial cancer. You will be introduced to the basic principles of specific techniques (e.g. quantitative fluorescence [QF] PCR, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification [MLPA], free fetal DNA analysis, DNA sequencing and other diagnostic tests), including what ‘good’ and ‘bad’ results looks like.

Cost: £190.00
