Involvement and Engagement within the Manchester BRC

The Manchester BRC recently reviewed how it involves and engages patients and members of the public with its research. Current practice highlights a wide range of activities and many areas of excellence. This review was conducted by Nowgen and has been published on the BRC website. This report also identifies future steps that will support this important work.

This work builds on ‘Working with patients and the public’ – the Manchester BRC’s strategy for patient and public involvement in research, which sets out four objectives:
1. to involve patients and members of the public within every project;
2. to inform, educate and stimulate thinking about the work of the MBRC;
3. to ensure that patients and members of the public help to guide the MBRC’s strategic direction;
4. to place the MBRC at the forefront of patient and public involvement (PPI) in research.

The review clearly illustrates Manchester BRC’s commitment to informing, engaging and involving patients and the public at all stages of research. It identifies examples of good practice, which will be shared to inform other researchers and future work. On the basis of the report, training and new resources are being devised to further support researchers and people who want to get involved in research.
