Successful next generation sequencing training courses at Nowgen

Researchers, scientists and clinicians from NHS, academia and industry from across the UK participated in Nowgen’s new training courses on next generation sequencing (NGS). These courses were sold out very quickly reflecting the need for training in this rapidly evolving technique.

Sequencing using next generation methods has become the major tool in genomics and is now used in research and clinical settings.  Understanding its capabilities and how to interpret and handle the vast array of data resulting from the sequencing were the focus of these new training courses organised by Nowgen.

The NGS Fundamentals course began with Professor Neil Hall, Director of the Centre for Genomic Research at theUniversityofLiverpool, giving an introductory session. The three main platform providers Illumina, Life Technologies and Roche gave overviews of the technologies and there were case study presentations about applications of the technology, including case studies from clinical diagnostic laboratories.

The NGS Bioinformatics course was delivered in part by Genomatix Software, a company with significant experience in training and bioinformatics for NGS. Delegates learnt about the processes for analysing NGS data and had practical sessions in Nowgen’s new bioinformatics training suite.

Courses were very well received and due to demand further NGS courses are being run in November.

It was also a good networking opportunity for delegates and speakers with the corporate sponsors; Agilent Technologies, Caliper Life Sciences, The Eastern Sequence and Informatics Hub (EASIH), Fluidgm, Illumina, Integrated DNA Technologies, Genomatix Software, Life Technologies and Roche.
