Idoia Gomez Paramio is the UK and Ireland Project Coordinator / Manager for Orphanet, the world’s reference portal for rare diseases, orphan drugs and related services. Orphanet is a European project that aims to contribute to the improvement of the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients with rare diseases.

Idoia studied Biological Sciences at The University of Heidelberg in Germany and at The University of Salamanca in Spain, where she gained her first MSc in 2000. She then studied Biochemistry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet in Munich and at The University of Salamanca and obtained her second MSc in 2001. In September that year she started a research project at the GSF-Forschungszentrum für Umwelt und Gesundheit in Munich that lead to the completion of her PhD in Molecular Biology, focussed on the repair of DNA. Later, Idoia worked for two years at Applied Biosystems coordinating different projects in the UK, France and Italy before joining the Nowgen team.

Besides her activities as Project Coordinator / Manager, Idoia provides regular training on Orphanet as part of the bioinformatics courses run at the Nowgen centre.
