Accessing genetics services for Deaf people

Genetic information in British Sign Language (BSL)

This NIHR-funded project investigates the communication component of Deaf people's barriers to accessing genetic counselling services. The project seeks Deaf people's preferred terminology and the factors influencing language. The results provide evidence that effective communication relies on far more than the correct choice of words.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and the project advisory group includes Deaf and hearing professionals and lay members from varied backgrounds. The development of innovative online data collection methods allowed participants to respond in BSL via webcam. www.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/geneticsigns

Final outcomes in early 2012 will include improved genetics resources in BSL and recommendations for health professionals.
