Supporting Science Teachers
Nowgen has worked with over 700 teachers since 2003. We are always looking for new opportunities to explore genetic medicine with teachers.
Collaborations include:
- Science Learning Centre North West
(one of these projects was kindly funded by RCUK – Research Councils UK) - The University of Manchester’s Biotechnology Summer School organised by the Faculty of Life Sciences
- Presenting at the National ASE conference – Association for Science Education
- Running workshops at the ASE Northern conference
- Presenting at the Citizenship and Science Education Conference organised by CitizED
- Contributing to Manchester Museum’s Teacher Training Events
- Organising workshops in conjunction with Bio-Rad (bio-tech company)
- Delivering workshop to all science teachers in Oldham LEA
- Running workshop for the Post-16 tutor network at Aquinas College
- Contributing to PGCE training at MMU (Manchester Metropolitan University)
Some of our courses have focused on laboratory skills and giving teachers the confidence to use molecular genetic kits in school. Other events have given teachers an update on developments in genetics from expert speakers. Finally, we have provided training on discussing social and ethical issues and using media articles in the classroom.
Nowgen has established a strong reputation in the education community, especially for providing CPD to teachers. We have worked closely with the Science Learning Centre North West (SLCNW) over the past seven years. Nowgen and the SLCNW jointly bid for funding from RCUK (Research Councils UK) to support the development of a new teacher CPD workshop in 2007. This course has now been rolled out to the other SLCs and this course was featured as a showcase course in the 2007-2008 National Science Learning Centre Report.
